Morskie Oko — the most famous lake in the Tatra Mountains. Everything you need to know
Morskie Oko is an icon of the Polish mountains. The largest and fourth deepest Tatra lake (up to 50.8 m) lies at an altitude of 1395 m above sea level, surrounded by an amphitheater of peaks with Rysy (2499 m above sea level) — the highest point in Poland — at the forefront.
Each year, Morskie Oko is visited by over a million tourists, making it the second most visited attraction in the Polish Tatras (after Krupówki). This guide will help you plan your visit without stress — showing how to get there, where to park, how long it takes, what to bring, and what to avoid.

Where is Morskie Oko located?
Morskie Oko is located in the Dolina Rybiego Potoku (Fish Stream Valley), in the Polish High Tatras, approximately 30 km southeast of Zakopane. Administratively, it belongs to the Tatra National Park, near the border with Slovakia.
The trail starting point is Palenica Białczańska — a large parking lot at the entrance to the valley, accessible by car, minibus, and bus. From there, you continue only on foot (or by horse-drawn carriage) — the road is closed to motorized traffic.
How to get to Morskie Oko from Zakopane?
Option 1: Your own car
Route: Zakopane → Bukowina Tatrzańska → Bukowina-Głodówka → Łysa Polana → Palenica Białczańska Time: approx. 50–60 minutes in good conditions Distance: approx. 30 km
⚠️ Pitfalls of traveling by your own car:
Parking at Palenica Białczańska is paid (approx. 50 PLN/day in 2026) and fills up extremely quickly — in season, it is often full by 7:00–8:00 AM.
Once the parking lot is full, police direct cars further — to the reserve parking lot near Łysa Polana, from where you walk 2 km to Palenica (an extra kilometer to cover each way).
On weekends in July and August, both parking lots can be full as early as 6:30 AM.
Option 2: Private minibus / day trip
Time: approx. 60 minutes from Zakopane Advantages: pickup from your hotel, no parking problems, tour guide assistance, guaranteed seat
Trio Travel organizes trips to Morskie Oko every day during the season. The bus picks you up from your accommodation, drops you off at Palenica, gives you free time on the trail, and in the afternoon takes you back to your hotel.
Option 3: Public minibus
Regular minibuses run from Zakopane station to Palenica Białczańska (approx. 15–20 PLN one way, travel time approx. 1 h). The downside is no guarantee of a seat on the return trip during peak hours — after descending, you may have to wait for the next service.
Trail: Palenica Białczańska → Morskie Oko
Length: 9 km one way Ascending time: 2–2.5 hours Descending time: 1.5–2 hours Total elevation gain: approx. 350 m vertically Difficulty: easy (technically), moderate (due to length)
The trail follows an asphalt road (former service road of the Tatra National Park) with a gentle, steady incline. It is not a classic mountain trail — no stones, roots, or ladders. You can cover it in sneakers (though trekking shoes are more comfortable).
Checkpoints along the route:
Palenica Białczańska (980 m above sea level) — start, TPN ticket office (entry ticket required)
Wodogrzmoty Mickiewicza (approx. 2 km from the start) — waterfalls on the Roztoka stream, a place for a short stop
Polana Włosienica (approx. 7 km from the start) — horse-drawn carriage stop, last 2 km of the hike
Schronisko nad Morskim Okiem (1410 m above sea level) — finish, restaurant, viewing terrace
Horse-drawn carriages to Morskie Oko — is it worth it?
From Palenica to Polana Włosienica (7 km out of 9 km), you can cover the route by horse-drawn carriage. Prices in 2026:
uphill: approx. 90 PLN/person
downhill: approx. 70 PLN/person
Carriages run from early spring to late autumn, in good weather. Travel time: approx. 35–40 minutes.
Is it worth it? Opinions are divided:
✅ if you are hiking with small children, seniors, or after an injury,
✅ if you have little time,
❌ if you expect a "mountain trip" — the carriage goes on asphalt; it is more transport than an attraction,
❌ there are critical voices regarding horse welfare — it is worth knowing and forming your own opinion.
What to see on site?
Morskie Oko — lake circuit
A circular trail (approx. 1 hour walk) goes around the lake. From different sides, the lake looks completely different — from the northern shore you have the classic view with Rysy in the background, from the southern shore, Mnich and Cubryna dominate the panorama.
Czarny Staw pod Rysami — bonus for the patient
Above Morskie Oko, at an altitude of 1583 m above sea level, lies Czarny Staw pod Rysami — the second deepest lake in the Polish Tatras (76 m). The ascent takes about 30–40 minutes of steeper climbing.
Contrary to opinion — this is not an optional addition, but a mandatory part of the program. The view from the shore of Czarny Staw towards Rysy, Mięguszowieckie Szczyty, and the rock walls reflected in the water is the most spectacular view in the Polish Tatras.
Schronisko nad Morskim Okiem (Morskie Oko Shelter)
Historic PTTK shelter from the 1970s (the previous wooden one burned down in 1898). It serves classic mountain shelter cuisine: apple pie, pierogi, sour soup, tea with raspberry syrup. Prices are higher than in Zakopane — that's normal; everything is brought in by helicopter or carriage.
Entry tickets to TPN
Entering the Tatra National Park to Morskie Oko is paid (unlike most other Tatra valleys). Prices in 2026:
regular ticket: 9 PLN
reduced ticket: 4.50 PLN (children 7–16, students, seniors, people with disabilities)
children under 7: free
You can buy a ticket at the ticket office in Palenica Białczańska or online on the TPN website. Payment only in PLN (cash or card).

Season
🌸 May–June — trail open, still few crowds, blooming flowers, moderate temperatures. Best time for those who want to avoid the crush.
☀️ July–August — peak season, maximum crowds, best weather, but parking full by 6 AM. Recommended only with a private minibus or a very early departure.
🍂 September–October — golden Polish autumn in the Tatras. Fewer people, colorful forests, cooler. Subjectively the best time.
❄️ November–April — Morskie Oko in winter is a different planet. Frozen lake, waist-deep snow, quieter. Trail technically easy, but requires crampons (microspikes) and appropriate footwear. Carriages do not run — the only options are on foot or cross-country skis.
Time of day
Best: departure from Zakopane at 5:30–6:30 AM, to be at Palenica before 7:00 AM. Then the trail is still empty, and sunlight is ideal for photos.
Worst: arriving at the parking lot between 9:00 and 11:00 AM — guaranteed full parking and crowds on the trail.
