Papal Trail – Sightseeing Tour of Zakopane and Surroundings

In the Footsteps of Saint John Paul II and Zakopane’s History
Join us for a unique, peaceful sightseeing tour that combines spirituality, history, and Highlander culture. The “Papal Trail” is ideal for those who want to discover Zakopane and its surroundings without strenuous hikes. For 4–5 hours, we travel by comfortable minibus with a guide, visiting the most important and touching places associated with Saint John Paul II and the region’s history.
Attraction Description:
- We start our journey at Toporowa Cyrhla, where the Papal Stone is located – the symbolic beginning of the Papal Trail. With a stunning view of the Tatra Mountains, Giewont, and Kasprowy Wierch, you can already feel the special atmosphere of this trip.
- Next, we head to the Chapel in Jaszczurówka – a gem of Zakopane architecture designed by Stanisław Witkiewicz. Inside, we take a quiet moment to feel the spirit of Highland faith.
- We drive through areas dear to Karol Wojtyła’s heart: Olczyska Valley and the base of Nosal. We also admire Wielka Krokiew and the ski jump complex – symbols of Zakopane’s sporting spirit.
- Wielka Krokiew and the ski jump complex – we admire the famous ski jump and its smaller counterparts from the outside.
- Next, we pass streets named after prominent Zakopane cultural figures and arrive at Kościeliska Street and the cemetery at Pęksowy Brzyzek. This is the oldest part of the city, featuring the wooden Gąsienica Chapel and the “U Jana Wnuka” inn.
- In the second part of the trip, we stop by Villa Koliba – one of the most important examples of the Zakopane style. Then we visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima in Krzeptówki. It houses Poland’s largest wooden altar and the papal altar from the Holy Mass celebrated by John Paul II in 1997 under Wielka Krokiew.
- On the way back, we visit a traditional shepherd’s hut in Witów where you can buy original oscypek cheese and taste fresh bundz. We also stop in Chochołów – a unique village of over 30 original wooden houses, known as a “living open-air museum.”
- We’ll also visit the workshop of famous sculptor Jan Ziędera, who gladly shares his passion and works with visitors. The trip ends with a ride over the top of Gubałówka – from here you can see the whole of Zakopane and the majestic Tatra Mountains. The perfect end to a day full of reflection, beautiful views, and unique encounters with the history and spirit of Podhale. The Papal Trail is not just a bus tour – it's a journey into the heart of culture, memory, and tradition.
